我听到有来自出版业的传媒人说,以前并不了解ESG,但是这次了解之后,她想要把ESG的理念不仅贯彻到书传播的理念,更要贯彻到书的制作流程,甚至希望联合制定更细化的出版业的可持续发展·ESG标准;

Media Sustainability-ESG Column | Issue 2
In-Depth Article: “The 1st Media Sustainability-ESG Ranking List Unveiled in Beijing, Catalyzing a Virtuous Transformation in the Industry”
Dear UNESCO MIL Alliance members,
Today, I would like to share with you some quiet yet significant shifts taking place in China’s media industry in 2025.
The concept of “Media Sustainability-ESG” remains relatively pioneering and cutting-edge for both Chinese media organizations and professionals. Popularizing this concept has been no easy task.
However, through “The 1st Media Sustainability-ESG Ranking List,” we have brought together a group of scholars and experts in China committed to advancing this field. Together, they contributed to the development of two rating models:
- The VPI Assessment Model for the Media Sector’s Corporate Sustainability (corporate model)
- The Sustainability-ESG Assessment Model for Media Productions (works model)
Using these models, we derived the following outcomes:
- The 1st Media Sustainability Index (corporate list)
- The 1st Media Sustainability-ESG Works List (works list)
Through this initiative, the principles of Media Sustainability-ESG are gradually entering the agenda of Chinese media companies and the consciousness of media professionals:
A publishing professional shared with me that she had little prior knowledge of ESG. However, after learning about it through the ranking, she now aims to integrate ESG principles not only into the messaging of books but also into the entire publishing process. She even expressed interest in collaboratively developing more detailed Sustainability-ESG standards tailored to the publishing industry.
A representative from the television industry mentioned their desire to explore the possibility of a “zero-carbon gala”—potentially the first in China to be self-monitored from an ESG perspective. Such an event would also allow sponsors to co-create social value aligned with ESG goals.
Industry transformation is never abrupt; it is gradual. It begins with the awakening of inspiration in individuals and slowly evolves into a shared consensus.
Warm regards,
